Sometimes I hear an instructor say, be prepared to drink from a firehose, I don’t think they have met Tom Givens.
We started off with classroom and a almost 200-page book that we would need to read each night to prepare for our written test the last day. There are 3 main qualifications to be able to earn the Rangemaster certificate, 1 written and 2 shooting. You need to pass all of them at a 90% or better score to pass, this is not a show up, take the class and pass type of deal you have to earn it.
In the classroom some of the things we covered were:
firearms safety, handgun nomenclature and operation, marksmanship fundamentals, handgun selection, deadly force legal issues, coaching, tactical principles and ammunition.
Then range time, it was hot, and June, and we were in Texas so let me tell you it was muggy and everyone was sweating, but it was worth it.
Tom took us through a ton of drills and techniques we could use with our students, and the responsibility of being an instructor and the standard he expected us to set. Not everyone made it, I’m happy to say I did get the coveted certificate and passed, along with one of our lead instructors Paul Chafee.
I would have to say a very intense class, a lot of work, no time for nonsense, and I loved every minute of it!
I’m excited about taking advanced instructor next.
